why celebrate easter
easter facts
Easter is the oldest Christian festival. It signifies the start of spring and celebrates the end of Lent.
The festival of Easter includes:
Lent: This start on Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the 40 days of contemplation and solitude Jesus went through in the desert. Christians fast in recognition of this, by not eating meat, fat, eggs and dairy products for the whole 40 days.
Good Friday: Commemorates the day of the crucifixion of Christ (used to be called God Friday) and is now a public holiday in most parts of the world.
Easter Sunday: Commemorates the day that Christ 'rose from the dead' and also marks the end of lent. This is when most families take part in Easter Egg Hunts outside and at home.
